The Rundown: Crusading journalist Vic Sage is taking on both a corrupt city and a mystery connected to his past and possible future.

As Vic Sage, a corrupt mayor and a city on the brink of social collapse will challenge the reporter as a former friend and the mayor’s sister must decide who she’s really loyal to when she finally sees the evidence of his crimes.

As The Question, Vic will find himself in the middle of a mystery that will involve finding an underground location filled with decaying bodies and one that has his face.

The Story: Vic Sage has always been an interesting and complicated character. Both his role in the media and as a hero have been a goldmine of drama worth exploring. Jeff Lemire does an excellent job of bringing the duality of the character and his complicated personality to life in this first issue. Lemire crafts an intricate story that touches on corruption, politics, police brutality and other social issues in the national zeitgeist.

What makes this first issue work is that Lemire keeps those things present while creating a mystery that is connected to The Question himself. It’s a mystery that draws you in as a reader and brims with possibility.

The Art: The art by Denys Cowan is fantastic and acts as the perfect complement to the story both in tone and style. The art reflects the gritty, noir detective style of the story itself and perfectly captures a world of shadows and secrets.
