The Rundown: A knight strikes a dark bargain to save his only son.

The year is 1349 and Sir Hugh De Grey, known as the Pale Knight, is returning home to England after a successful and violent campaign in France. His actions during the battle have pushed him away from his faith and only his squire and the priest on the ship are aware of it. He also finds himself at odds with a fellow knight who rivals him in skill and has a personal issue with De Grey on and off the battlefield.
After returning to England, he learns that the deadly contagion that is ravaging Europe has made its way to the shores of his country. Desperate to return to his wife and son, the Pale Knight discovers that his wife is safe, but his son is clinging to life. As he prays for god to take him instead, Death appears to the knight and offers him a deal that could save De Grey’s only son.
The Story: Milligan crafts a dark, entertaining story in this first issue. There are some great emotional and psychological layers to the characters and their conflicts and a wonderful sophistication to the storytelling that sets up some great elements that I want to see explored as the story progresses.
The Art: Rodrigues delivers some beautiful art throughout the issue. The visuals are unique, detailed and capture the dark tone of the story as well as the time and location it takes place in.
