Fox is trying a huge gambit (sorry) in moving two of its Marvel films scheduled release dates.

In a new shakeup, Deadpool 2 will be released two weeks earlier than its scheduled June 1st release date. Now the sequel to the highly successful film starring Ryan Reynolds will premiere May 18th. This put the sequel in direct competition with Sony’s Slender Man film and more importantly, places the film one week before the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story. This move is risky for Fox due to Star Wars films usually performing strong during the first two weeks of release. Perhaps the studio is confident that Deadpool 2 can either hold onto its lead after its initial release and beat the spinoff film or that it will hold steady in the early summer momentum that will have Avengers Infinity War starting off that month.

Josh Boone’s horror themed Marvel mutant thriller The New Mutants will also be changing release dates. The film was originally going to be released April 13, 2018 and now it looks like the movie will be coming to theaters February 22, 2019. The move is seen as a means of keeping some distance between both films as they would be in competition with each other in some foreign markets.

Gambit, which still has Channing Tatum attached to produce and star, recently lost its third director. Now news has come that the film is still in production with a new release date of June 7, 2019 with the studio actively looking for a replacement for Gore Verbinski.
