The Rundown: Death crosses paths with The Creator of Immortality.

Death, in the form of Laila Starr, befriends a funeral crow. He then asks her to attend a ceremony in which he will play a part. Elsewhere, six year old Darius runs away from home to honor a friend. The history of their relationship is then described. Later, Laila meets a sad young boy on the beach. After a heartfelt conversation, he runs off. She follows him and makes a surprising discovery. Laila then finds herself participating in a funeral ritual when tragedy strikes.

The Story:
Ram V creates a compelling and beautifully written narrative that explores the meaning of life and death. The conversation between opposing forces is brilliant. And there is something beautiful in the way one influences the other. Each character’s evolution is fascinating. I am so interested in how this story will continue and am looking forward to the next episode.

The Art:
This issue is filled with watercolor style panels in a variety of tones that flow with the changing moods of the story. The drawing is a mix of traditional and fantasy. And I especially like the way one character is crafted in a manner representative to a child’s imagination. This edition is engaging and made me feel very connected to the tale.
