The Hulk has been cut into pieces and those pieces are being experimented on at Shadow Base with Dr. Clive taking no limit of perverse pleasure in not only cutting Hulk into pieces, but parading those pieces around so Hulk’s intact head can see it. While the base continues to study the Hulk, Carol Danvers and Alpha Flight decide that they are going to find a way to find the missing Hulk.
After getting the run around from officials in the government, Carol enlists Sasquatch and McGee to start looking for Hulk while she put political and public pressure on the government and those hiding him. As the story goes public that Hulk is missing, Clive and his team are ordered to vacate the base and transport Hulk and the other subjects to new locations. As Clive goads Hulk with what he plans for him, he realizes too late that bringing Hulk to the base was exactly what he wanted all along.
This issue was incredibly fun to read. The build up to the finale of this issue was paced really well. As a reader, I found myself wondering which direction this story would go and wanting to know how Hulk would find his way out of the base. Ewing does a great job of playing on that tension with a story that takes a darkly comedic tone towards the end.
Joe Bennett’s art is great. I enjoy his rendition of Hulk and the facial expressions that he gives him are both amusing and disturbing. There are panels where the menace of this Hulk is deliberately focused on his smile and those moments make the character more intriguing.
