The Rundown: Hulk will have to fight the influence of Xemnu in his mind if he has any chance of stopping Agger and the alien from tearing his world apart.

Bruce is still under the impression that he is Robert Banner and all of the false memories implanted in his mind from Xemnu are causing him to slip deeper into madness. The Hulks in his subconscious will have to find the part of him being used by the alien and exercise it before Hulk can emerge and fight back.

After a violent lesson to the part of himself living in the delusion, Hulk takes over and takes the fight to Xemnu and Dario Agger at Roxxon. Unfortunately for the CEO, he’s going to discover that he might have backed the wrong horse by putting all his faith in a creature like Xemnu.

The Story: Al Ewing probes deep into the heart of Bruce Banner’s psychosis in this issue and gives the reader an excellent views of the internal conflict within the man at all times. The story transitions violently back to the real world danger of Xemnu and that tonal shift is completely appropriate for this particular title and its characters. I was interested in how this story was going to play out and Ewing didn’t disappoint. It was violent, unexpected and strange. The reveal at the end was absolutely worth waiting for and it opens up some interesting story points and plots going forward.

The Art: Joe Bennett’s art is always spectacular and I love how characters and action are blended seamlessly into the panel. Art, in my opinion, is subjective and I don’t knock the creative team for trying something different with the mindscape sequence, but I didn’t care for Nick Pitarra’s work in this story. It was too cartoonish a distraction from the themes being explored in this story and took away from the mood of the narrative a lot.
