Doc Samson has returned and his first order of business is to stop his former friend and patient Hulk from murdering the cyborg assassin who shot Betty Ross. The fact that half of Hulk’s brain is still repairing itself as the rest of his body rages is going to make that a lot more difficult.

In the interim, Samson’s journey beyond the grave is chronicled as he is poked and prodded by SHIELD to determine if he’s still under the influence of MODOK. When they determine that he’s not, Samson decides to stay away from his former life. Something that is easier said than done when he witnesses what is happening to both Bruce and Hulk. He makes forays back into his old life, starting with Betty.

Back in the present, he finds himself fighting Hulk in order to give the creatures body time to heal itself. When Hulk regains control, Samson discovers that Betty is gone and that this Hulk is uniquely different than the previous ones with a personality that Bruce feared to unleash. As the two of them go looking for Betty, Samson realizes that Hulk has led him somewhere familiar and that Betty is not their intended target.

The mystery of the Green Door and its implications in Hulk’s story continue to be interesting. While I enjoyed seeing how Samson returned, what happened to Betty last issue seemed to take a back seat plot wise. It’s possible that it will be revisited, but it was glaring in the reading as I asked myself “What happened to Betty?” as I had to read through Samson’s post-death bio and fight with Hulk. Ewing does make the Samson/Hulk dynamic interesting and entertaining as well as leave the issue with a great cliffhanger ending. I’m interested in seeing where this story goes.

Joe Bennett has some truly dynamic and amazing artwork throughout this issue and his rendering of the Hulk is always beautifully monstrous.
