The Rundown: A priest in Brazil is offered a chance to be a hero, but another might be a better fit.
Amidst the corruption and violence in Brazil, the police have become more violent and corrupt than the cartels with police gangs taking out criminals and anyone who steps out of line. One of the only people wiling to stand up to the corrupt police is Father Vitor Pereira and his efforts get the attention of Choon-He and her Ambassador initiative.
At the same time, a young officer named Zee finds herself doing whatever she needs to do to survive. She knows that violence is part of the job and that if she doesn’t play along, she will end up dead. When her superior sends her to assassinate Father Pereira, the young woman and the priest come to an interesting understanding.
The Story: Millar crafts an amazing story filled with great tension that leads to an awesome twist ending that I loved. The corruption elements of the story work really well and the tension between Father Pereira and Zee is palpable. Not only is the story complicated and engaging, but it is diving into some moral ambiguity that enhances the drama. The end of the issue opens more interesting turns for the story to take and I look forward to them.
The Art: Coipel’s art is fantastic. Every action scene is visually thrilling and feels like its in motion. Every character moment is filled with great details and the visual style is amazing.
