The Rundown: Tempus Fuginaut is working to stop another crisis in the making. In order to fight against this oncoming darkness, he will look for new warriors among the denizens of the Dark Multiverse. His first stop is a world where the events of Knightfall took a dramatically different direction.

In this world, the Batman has been broken by Bane and when he returns to take up the mantle again, his battle against his chosen successor Jean-Paul Valley takes an unexpected turn. A turn that will find Bruce defeated and Valley as the new Batman of Gotham.

Thirty years later, Gotham is a different place, ruled with an iron fist by “Batman” and his acolytes, but years of relying on Venom to sustain him have affected Jean-Paul and his weakness will be the what paves the road for insurgents to invade the city. Insurgents led by the son of an enemy and another familiar face. Their mission will be to take down Jean-Paul’s power structure in the city, end the man himself and rescue a very different Bruce Wayne if they can.

The Story: Gripping and disturbing, Scott Snyder and Kyle Higgins go for the jugular with this story. Not only do we see the aftermath of one of the defining moments in the Dark Knight’s life, but the story takes its new direction to the razor’s edge and keeps it compelling, engaging and tragic. This truly is a dark tale and I have to give it to Snyder and Higgins for taking the reader to the brink of hope and then throwing in a twist that is equal parts satisfying and disturbing.

The Art: Javier Fernandez offers some beautiful art in this issue. The tone of the visuals perfectly matches the gritty, noir style of the story. There is a darkness and despair to this story that Fernandez is able to bring out in each panel as the story grows and changes.
