The Rundown: Tempus Fuginaut delivers a new story where the events of Infinite Crisis play out very differently.

Ted Kord escapes his death at the hands of Maxwell Lord and goes against his instincts as a hero to elimate Max as a threat once and for all. Taking over the reins of Checkmate, Ted works behind the scenes to end the global and intergalactic threats that would bring about a new crisis for the heroes of the planet.

With the world being saved without their knowledge, the rest of the Justice League are effectively sidelined as Ted ends one threat after another with the help of Brother Eye. When Alexander Luthor and Superboy accelerate their plans, Ted finds a way to bring the boy of steel to his side and enacts a new plan to stop the real threat to the planet, Earth’s heroes.

The Story: Infinite Crisis was one of the defining moments in the DC universe and to take a look at that moment from a new angle sounds interesting. While this issue is interesting, it really doesn’t rise above that. It is an interesting story with an interesting concept, but there wasn’t much there to make this story stand out. James Tynion IV hits all the right narrative marks with the story, but it never really comes alive because everything in it is so convenient. I wasn’t surprised by anything and instead found myself wondering how Ted Kord suddenly developed the insight and strategic mind capable enough to predict threats and handle them. Even with Brother Eye helping him, it all felt too clean. I was hoping for some interesting plot twists, but for a Dark Multiverse tale, it felt too safe.

The Art: Aaron Lopresti did some impressive work with the art in this issue. It certainly had the look of the original Infinite Crisis. Visually, a great looking story.
