The Rundown: The Last Monitor travels the worlds of the Dark Multiverse trying to save who he can, but destruction is everywhere.
The last Monitor is revealed to be the final sidekick of Batman, Duke Thomas. As he returns to the only world left, he sees the destruction around him and wonders if there is anything he can do to stop it. As he remembers the world as it was, he is confronted by the world that is in the form of Barbatos and his twisted versions of the Justice League. Just as all hope seems lost, Duke will discover that he is not the only hero left fighting in a world of Metal.
Duke follows Dick back to the remains of the Watchtower and discovers that he isn’t alone. Unfortunately, the heroes who remain are waiting for the end to come and simply surviving until it does. Duke rallies the heroes into one final fight. A final fight that will bring him to face to face with Barbatos and forge a new destiny for Duke Thomas.
The Story: An exciting, energetic and well done story all around. Not only is Duke Thomas elevated as a character, but the story goes in directions no one could have predicted and adds great drama and pathos to the sacrifice of the heroes in it. I liked the cynical edge of the surviving heroes and was impressed with how the plot unfolded as well as the dialogue. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens to Duke Thomas after this story.
The Art: Mostert delivers some great art in this issue. There are great visual moments and a lot of action. The art does an excellent job of matching the tone of the story.
