According to an exclusive in Deadline, Disney/Fox have enlisted Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi to help bring to life a new animated feature based on the Alex Raymond creation to life. While it was originally reported that Waititi would be both writing and directing the feature, it’s currently unclear what the director’s role will be in the production. Euphemistically, it is being said that the director will “crack” the story. Meaning he will find a way to make the character and story viable for another writer/director to tackle.

The story of space adventurer Flash Gordon and the evil Ming the Merciless has endured for decades and been adapted in multiple forms both animated and live action for the big screen and television. It will be interesting to see what Taika Waititi’s take on the character will be. Will he play it straight? Or lean into the camp roots of the 1930’s hero?
