The Rundown: Superman must help defend the Tower of Fate against a magical creature older than the Lords of Order themselves.

Xanadoth has emerged and the creature wants the helm of Doctor Fate. Kent Nelson, Khalid and Superman are all that stand in its way and the trio will have their work cut out for them when it is revealed that the creature they face is more powerful than any of them imagine and even Fate fears its power.

As Fate pulls Khalid from the battle, Superman must face the creature alone to give his colleague time to come up with a plan. Unfortunately, the creature knows that the man of steel is vulnerable to magic.

The Story: Pitting Superman against a being made of magic is an interesting plot device. Knowing Superman is vulnerable to magic allows for some intriguing story ideas and the possiblity of a threat that can be challenging. Unfortunately, none of that happens in this issue. The story is weak and the dialogue is even worse. I never got a sense of duality from Xanadoth. The conversations between the characters were dreadful and the dialogue from Xanadoth was just dumb. What kind of powerful, magical entity tells people to shush?

From a story standpoint, this should have been an issue of Justice League Dark featuring Superman for how much his presence was actually necessary.

The Art: Kevin Maguire and John Timms do some good work with the art, but the story really relegates them to crafting panels showing the characters preparing to act rather than being active.
