The Rundown: The events that led to the destruction of Krypton are retold from Jor-El’s point of view as Lex makes another offer.

Jor-El is worried when he gets home to his wife and newborn son. All of his information and research is telling him that the planet is heading towards disaster, but no one on the science council believes him and he makes a final plea to the people he knows can do something if they wanted to; The Circle.

The secret group will not help him because they tell him that they cannot confirm his research, but something else is behind their decision when one of them let slip the name of Rogol Zaar. When Jor-El goes to ask questions, a Thanagarian hit squad convinces him that it’s time for him to enact his plan to rescue his son.

As father relays this information to son, Lois Lane gets a visit from Lex Luthor who decides to leave her with a gift.

The Story: Taking a step back to tell a familiar story from a different point of view can be tricky. It’s difficult to make this story seem fresh or new, but Bendis finds a way to make it both interesting and grounded in its storytelling. There’s a somber tone to Jor-El’s story and the steps the Circle takes to hide their actions adds a layer to Superman’s story that makes it more interesting. The Lex Luthor interlude at the end of the issue opens up the possibility for some really interesting story to come.

The Art: Brandon Peterson and Ivan Reis create some beautiful and engaging art in this issue. The pace of the story is punctuated by the amazing art.
