The Rundown: It’s family day at Strange Academy and even a day devoted to fun can be intense when magic is involved.

Family day at Strange Academy is a time for celebration and for the students to see their loved ones. Unfortunately, two students have some unique issues when it comes to family. Doyle’s father Dormmamu is not allowed on Earth and Calvin’s dark history with his foster parents means that they will not be joining him either. As the families meet and greet each other, Doyle and Calvin decide to ditch the events and check out the magical armory.

With the events in full swing, Emily warns everyone about her mother’s intensity when it comes to competition. Something everyone learns when she goes up against Loki during several events. As the families continue to compete, Doyle has an intense run in with the Mindless Ones. A confrontation that unleashes something dark within Calvin.

The Story: Young continues to find a great balance between intensity and fun with this issue. Not only does the story continue to lean into its fantastical elements brilliantly, but the dialogue and characters continue to be compelling and interesting as their pasts and personalities are explored. I continue to find this issue and this series consistently engaging and fun to read.

The Art: Humberto Ramos delivers the perfect tone with the art in this issue. The visuals are beautifully done and match the tone and spirit of the story perfectly.
