With the tragic death of Carrie Fisher last year, fans and professionals at Lucasfilm knew that there would have to be a resolution for Leia’s story and that her character would not be available for the third part of the new trilogy being directed by Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World).

The Hollywood Reporter has the exclusive story that Star Wars Episode IX is being rewritten after Trevorrow and Derek Connolly’s script was written. According to the report, British writer Jack Thorne was brought in to give the script a fresh set of eyes and he will be taking over the rewrite of the screenplay which is set to begin filming January 2018.

Thorne is known for his work writing dramas for the BBC including The Fades, Skins and This is England ’88 and ’90. He has contributed to feature film screenplays like the post-apocalyptic love story How I Live Now and an episode of the upcoming science fiction anthology series Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams which is executive produced by Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, written and directed by Rian Johnson is set to be released December 15, 2017.
