The Rundown: Speed Racer searches for his destiny while the dangers of the real world hit close to home.

Speed Racer has chosen his destiny and it is behind the wheel of the Mach 5 as he prepares for another race with his little brother Spritle taking bets on the winner. As Speed thinks back on the legacy of his brother Rex, he takes off to victory. A victory that will be short lvied when he returns home to be confronted by his father who doesn’t want him in that world.
As Speed leaves to be alone and runs into a girl named Trixie, Pops Racer gets a visit from a shadowy group who want him to design and build an engine for them. When he refuses, Speed returns to find his father near death and must race him to the hospital with practically the city’s entire police force on his tail. At the same time, the mysterious Racer X makes his presence in the city known with a violent confrontation with a gang member.
The Story: Pepose delivers a fun, fast and thrilling story in this first issue. Not only are the stakes for the characters brilliantly delivered, but there is enough fun, action and intrigue to capture my attention and imagination. I love the interpersonal drama between Speed and Pops. I love Speed’s internal conflict. I love that the family is fractured after the disappearance of Rex and how those wounds still haven’t healed. There is a maturity to this version of Speed Racer and I look forward to seeing how this story unfolds.
The Art: Tinto delivers beautifully detailed and visually impressive art throughout the issue. I love the racing moments and how vibrant, dangerous an engaging they are.
