The Rundown: Erica finds herself at the Slaughterhouse and preparing for a brutal initiation.

Gary Slaughter awakens in his palatial home in the middle of nowhere and prepares to receive visitors. When Jessie arrives with young Erica, the man greets them warmly and brings them inside for something to eat. As they reminisce and enjoy each other’s company, Erica has a chance to finally relax.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t last long.

After Gary leaves, Jessie tells the young girl that she is about to begin her initiation. An initiation that will bring her to a dark building on the property with only Gary inside and the creature that slaughtered her family and changed her life.

The Story: Taking the reader back to Erica’s early days with the House of Slaughter is a great arc for both the reader and the character. James Tynion IV immerses and engages the reader with great dialogue, plotting and emotion. There is a darkness to this story that centers on Erica and her journey from a strong child dealing with the aftermath of tragedy to the strong, determined woman who bucks the system and I am here for that journey. I was surprised and entertained by every twist this story took and how unexpected the ending was. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

The Art: Werther Dell’edera delivers some powerful and beautiful imagery throughout the issue. The tone of the story is brilliantly captured with the art and the visual style continues to capture the imagination.
