In what’s been described as an incredibly competitive situation, Apple has triumphed and walked away with something huge.

Isaac Asimov’s Foundation trilogy of books has inspired everything from Star Wars to Futurama and Skydance Television (who made a deal with the Asimov estate last year) will produce the straight to series adaptation of Asimov’s work. The series will be executive produced by David S. Goyer (Krypton) and screenwriter Josh Friedman (Avatar 2).

The expansive story of Foundation tells the complex saga of human colonies scattered throughout the galaxy, all living under the control of a central empire. The stories are told by a psycho-historian who has the ability to read the future and can see the imminent collapse of the empire. His mission is to save the knowledge of mankind before it is wiped out.

Apple is making big moves into scripted television, greenlighting straight to series orders for other series including a reboot of the anthology series Amazing Stories from Steve Spielberg. Skydance Television will be adding Foundation to their growing list of shows including Altered Carbon on Netflix and the upcoming Jack Ryan series.

Personally, I am excited for the prospect of this series to come to life. One the other hand, Goyer’s track record is hit or miss with me and Friedman is an up and coming screenwriter who wrote the Tom Cruise version of War of the Worlds. Let me know what you think in the comments below.
