Showtime has given a ten episode series order to a live action adaptation of the popular XBOX video game series Halo.

Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television has teamed up with Awake creator Kyle Killen and Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt on the series which will see both Wyatt and Killen as executive producers. Killen will serve as showrunner on the series as well as writer and Wyatt is expected to direct several episodes of the series itself.

“Halo is our most ambitious series ever, and we expect audiences who have been anticipating it for years to be thoroughly rewarded,” said David Nevins, President and CEO Showtime Networks. “In the history of television, there simply has never been enough great science fiction. Kyle Killen’s scripts are thrilling, expansive and provocative, Rupert Wyatt is a wonderful, world-building director, and their vision of Halo will enthrall fans of the game while also drawing the uninitiated into a world of complex characters that populate this unique universe.”

The Halo series will take place in the 26th century as the forces of Earth battle the forces of the alien Covenant. The series is said to mix both personal stories along with action and adventure. No word yet on whether the main character of the Halo series, Master Chief, will be the main character in the Halo series.

It’s been a long journey for the series itself having been originally announced in 2013 as a series on XBOX, but the division was shut down. Rumors of a live action movie continued for years before it was finally picked up by Showtime, where it continued to be in development until today’s announcement.
