With the success of the first Black Panther, it was almost a forgone conclusion that writer/director Ryan Coogler would return for the sequel, but up until recently, there was no confirmation.

According to an exclusive in The Hollywood Reporter, Coogler has quietly finished a deal with Marvel Studios to write and direct the sequel to Black Panther.

The first film took in over $700 million dollars domestically and $1.3 billion dollars worldwide. Even though a sequel was almost certain, Coogler and his team downplayed their involvement and took the time to negotiate with the studio. The negotiating payed off and Coogler is said to be writing the screenplay next year with an eye to begin production either late 2019 or early 2020. Marvel and Disney have not made any official announcements about any of the films past next year’s Avengers 4 in May and Spider-Man: Far From Home in July.

Coogler’s next film is the drama Wrong Answer that will feature Black Panther star Michael B Jordan and he is executive producing the sequel to Space Jam starring Lebron James as well as Creed 2.
