CBS All-Access just announced that it has given a two-season order to a new series that will take the Star Trek universe in a different direction, comedy.

According to TV guide, executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Katie Krentz are bringing a new animated series titled Star Trek: Lower Decks to the streaming service with Rick and Morty head writer and executive producer Mike McMahan.

McMahan recently wrote the Star Trek: Short Treks episode The Escape Artist and is the author of Star Trek: The Next Generation – Warped, subtitled An Engaging Guide to the Never-Aired 8th Season.

“Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: ‘I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end.’ His cat’s name is Riker. His son’s name is Sagan. The man is committed,” according to executive producer Alex Kurtzman.

According to Deadline, the series will be a half-hour adult animated comedy series that will focus on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships.

“While Star Trek: Lower Decks is a half-hour, animated show at its core, it’s undeniably Trek – and I promise not to add an episode at the very end that reveals the whole thing took place in a training program.” Says McMahan.

No release date has been announced.
