The conspiracy that Rachel finds herself in the middle of drives her find answers when a trusted mentor and friend is murdered in front of her. When she confronts Crane about her suspicions and the evidence that she has already gathered, he immediately gets to work coming up with a plan. She’s surprised that he is so willing to help her, but the genius that he is already deduced who she was and what she was about before she told him what they were up against.

What they are up against is a conspiracy that spans the globe with a group that are brutal and sadistic to the most vulnerable. As Crane makes a stop in Russia to find a hidden object that might be the next clue to the mystery, the group called The Brotherhood of the Dragon, are making invasion plans. Plans that could be devastating to the entire world.

The dynamic between Crane and Rachel is very reminiscent of Holmes and Watson and that works in the context of this story. Millar doesn’t pull any punches with the second issue of this series. There are some serious and intense moments throughout, but there is also humor. It’s paced to keep the reader interested and asking questions because the characters are dynamic and engaging. What also works in its favor is that there is still a lot of mystery to uncover and you anticipate and welcome the discoveries that Crane makes throughout the story.

The art by Rafael Albuquerque is brutal and amazing. There are moments in the story where brutal and violent acts are performed that Albuquerque renders with great detail as well as beauty. There is a fluidity to the art that keeps up with the increasing pace of the story. It’s great to experience both working together so well.
