The Bangor Daily News is reporting on a story that affects one of my favorite authors.

According to the news from Bangor, Maine, a pipe burst in the basement of a downtown business and several businesses were flooded as a result. One of those businesses that took significant damage was Gerald Winters’ bookstore.

The store specializes in rare and limited edition copies of King’s books and it is estimated that the damage could be as high as 2,000 books including limited edition King books, galleys, signed copies and prints in other languages. Winters had moved his inventory to the basement while the store was being reorganized. He’s spent almost two decades collecting rare books from King and other authors like J.R.R. Tolkien.

Among the lost first editions and signed copies, Winters also says that he lost as many as seven of Stephen King’s original typed manuscripts including  Dolan’s Cadillac, Maximum Overdrive and The Eyes of the Dragon. “I’m horrified. As a book lover, my heart goes out to him,” King said to the Bangor Daily News. He also added; “I will eventually reach out and see if I can help in any way.”

Winters has met with insurance adjusters to assess the overall damage.
