The Rundown: A world bathed in darkness will lead to the emergence of new and darker threats.

A global phenomenon called the Big PM hit the planet unexpectedly and plunged it into darkness including the absence of both the sun and the stars. Val Riggs, her brother Emory and her parents escape the phenomenon, but it forces the two kids to take on new roles in a new society. A society that must remain in the light or succumb to the creatures stalking the darkness.

Val is a driver ferrying refugees to the last pockets of civilization and the absence of light has mutated both human and animals into infectious killing machines. A danger she knows all too well as she fights off a group of creatures on her way into town. After dropping off her passengers, Val is charged to take on a new mission. One that might be the only hope for someone close to her, but she is carrying some potentially dangerous cargo.

The Story: Scott Snyder builds a new, immersive world with this series. Both the premise and the characters are engaging. You feel a part of this dark world and its stakes. There are personal stakes for the characters that are emotional and interesting. Val is a dynamic character and her dialogue is great. I’m impressed with the scope of this story and the bigger mystery that awaits.

The Art: Tony S Daniel delivers some beautifully detailed art throughout the issue. The characters look great and the action is both thrilling and filled with energy. The immediacy of the story allows for Daniel to incorporate a sense of movement to the panels.
