Abel’s journey is about to get more mysterious and dangerous in equal measure.

After escaping from his father, Abel and his fox are riding the rails.

When they are confronted by a pair with murder on their minds, the pair have to make a hasty retreat across the top of the train. With danger getting closer, Abel finds himself being rescued by a mysterious old man named Jeb who offers to help him with the growing and glowing wound in his chest.

After traveling with Jeb to the man’s home, Abel’s anger begins to reveal its connection to the wound on his chest. When Jeb tells the boy to calm down and get some sleep, Abel and his fox decide to leave the comfort and safety of Jeb’s home to strike out on their own and get help.

Middlewest continues to be a compelling tale both from the personal drama that Abel is going through, but also in the strange and interesting world that is being crafted by Skottie Young. The world of this story fills me with questions and the story is engaging enough for me to come back and learn more. The war raging inside Abel between his hurt and his anger makes him a tragic hero in a sense and I want to see who and what this character becomes.

The art by Jorge Corona is beautiful and showcases the strange mixture of pastoral beauty and industry that makes me want to know more about this world.
