The next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is shaping up now and the studio has chosen a director for one of their new projects.

Deadline has an exclusive that says that Marvel Studios has tapped Destin Daniel Cretton to direct the adaptation of Shang-Chi: Master of King Fu. This will be the first superhero franchise film with an Asian protagonist. Chinese American screenwriter Dave Callaham is writing to script for the upcoming film.

Callaham has strong credentials in the superhero world. He co-wrote the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 and is currently writing the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Shang-Chi was created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin. The story, which will be modernized to avoid stereotypes associated with the character, will focus on Shang-Chi who has been trained in isolation for years to be the ultimate weapon and protect his father’s work. When he discovers that his father’s legacy is one of death, he turns against him in order to stop him.

Cretton is currently directing the film Just Mercy, which he wrote, and stars Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson and Black Panther’s Michael B Jordan.
