The Rundown: Jessica Cruz battles the forces of Darkseid and tries to break through to Cyborg as a new potential ally has a plan to end the threats across the universe.

JLO_18_3

Jessica Cruz and Orion find themselves in a standoff against Cyborg and the New New Gods as they try to protect their would be rescuer Gamma Knife. As the battle intensifies, they awaken the Eskaton who destroys the forces and goes after Cyborg. Cruz will have to stand up to the being if she has any chance of saving her friend.

At the same time, the rest of the team discovers that Gamma Knife’s boss is familiar to the new gods and this being has been traversing through several different times until he is forced out of his machine. As he gathers the team together, he presents them with a radical plan that he believes will fix everything including the threats of both Darkseid and Perpetua.

The Story: Dan Abnett brings this story some dramatic tension as the face off against Cruz and Cyborg raises the stakes for both as well as alerts Darkseid to the threat facing him. At the same time, the introduction of a new character adds some context to the events happening throughout the universe and shows the reader that this story does still connect with the rest of the universe. It’s a good story overall, but definitely needs to pick up the pace to stay interesting.

The Art: Cliff Richards has some dynamic art in this issue. There are some good action beats and the characters look great, but the story doesn’t really allow the art to shine.
