The Rundown: Trapped in the Black Mercy, Batman must come to a realization about himself if he has any chance of escape.

The Black Mercy has trapped the Justice League and has decided to pay particular attention of Batman.

Using the guise of Bruce’s mother, the creature attempts to get Bruce to let go of the man he is in favor of a future without fighting. A future without his pain as a catalyst. A future without Batman. It will take the combined effort of the Justice League to escape the Black Mercy and free their friend, but has the Black Mercy’s message already been received by Batman?

The Story: Even though the entire team is trapped by the Black Mercy, Jeff Loveness decides to focus this story and its conclusion on Batman. A prospect that is both interesting and limiting in its scope. A journey through Batman’s psyche is always fun to read, but it is ground that is familiar and tread so often that it’s lost any chance of feeling new. I liked how Loveness executes the story and it sets up come interesting character moments for Bruce, but I wish I had gotten to see what the Black Mercy had shown the other members of the League. What ideal existence would John Stewart live in? What could the Black Mercy show Clark that was more idyllic than the last time they faced each other?

This was a good story, but it could have enlightening, fresh and better if it had focused on another character or shown more than one fantasy world.

The Art: Robson Rocha delivers some hauntingly beautiful art in this issue. While the characters all look dynamic and there are great details in every panel, the depiction of Batman as a protective force for young Bruce was gorgeously rendered.
