Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer continues to be a fan favorite even after being off the air for 14 years. The series has gone from television to video games and its current iteration as a comic book series.

According to comicbook.com and Newsarama, Joss Whedon will co-write along with Erika Alexander, a spin-off limited comic book series based on the early days of Buffy’s Watcher Giles. The series, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Giles, will be drawn by Jon Lam and colored by Dan Jackson. In the current comic book series, Giles was killed at the end of Season 8 and resurrected in Season 9 in the body of his ten-year old self.

The new spinoff series will have a 15-year-old Giles, who still retains his adult mind and memories, will be enrolling in an inner city school to investigate the disappearances of several teachers. Whedon gave an interview with the AV Club where he discussed the culture shock a teenaged Giles will face in the new series.

“Giles has never really dealt with the public school system as it exists for most kids. He’s never been to the city. Giles has always had the advantage of being a part of the system that educated him. He was taught to be a watcher in a family of watchers. His education was, in the grand British public school tradition, both expansive and parochial. In-depth views of tiny portions of the world. Of course, he walked over the awkward hormonal coals of adolescence—but now he knows more, and expects better of himself. His once-more 15-year-old body, however, is oblivious to his wisdom/cynicism/impatience.” Whedon said.

The first issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Giles goes on sale February 28, 2018.
