In the wake of public allegations and turmoil in his personal life which led to litigation in a UK court, actor Johnny Depp will be leaving the third film in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise.

The third Fantastic Beast film has been shooting since September and after the verdict against the actor in court, both Depp and Warner Brothers released statements regarding his continued participation in the film series.

According to the statement from the studio, “Johnny Depp will depart the Fantastic Beasts franchise,” the statement says, “We thank Johnny for his work on the films to date. Fantastic Beasts 3 is currently in production, and the role of Gellert Grindelwald will be recast. The film will debut in theaters worldwide in the summer of 2022.”

Depp released a statement through his Instagram account thanking supporters and vowing to continue to prove the allegations against him are false.

David Yates is currently filming the third Fantastic Beast film in the UK. There is currently no news on who will replace Depp as Grindelwald in the film.
