The Rundown: The Storyteller and his companion are visited by a stranger. Oyinlolla convinces the god Eshu to help her with a delicate situation.
The Storyteller invites the Stranger into his home to rest for a while. In return, the Stranger gifts them with the tale of Oyinolla and the god Eshu using a sing a sing-song call and response method. First, the trickster god Eshu’s backstory is relayed. Later, he appears to Lolla after hearing her prayer. Then, the two agree to a proposal that has surprising results.
The Story: This tale was delightfully executed. I appreciate how the Stranger is just as fascinating as the tale she weaves. And it’s interesting to see the Storyteller suddenly become the listener. The story of Lolla and Eshu is both entertaining and inspiring. And I am impressed with the way Lolla takes control of her own narrative. The Tricksters series is really enjoyable, and I look forward to the next edition.
The Art: Kubo uses simplistic designs combined with brilliant colors in a myriad of tones. The varying hues are visually pleasing and transportive. I adore the care that is taken with the Black characters. The hair styles and clothing are beautifully done. This is an impressive and well crafted issue.
