The Rundown: As the night gets colder and the fire begins to die, the storyteller implores his faithful dog to give up his stick to help the fire burn. In exchange, he will regale them both with a story.

Willa Westness lives by the sea with her mother and young siblings. When she is tasked to gather worms for her mother, she stumbles upon a sea lion and her calf in a small cave off the coast. When the mother is spooked and leaves, Willa sits and plays with the pup before returning her when the mother returns.

Years later, Willa and her two siblings are collecting cockles by the shore when the tide begins to rise. As she tries to coax her scared siblings to go with her, she is offered help from a kindly woman and her daughter. Both of whom look really familiar.

The Story: Sarah Webb offers a fun, engaging and sweet parable in this story about how important a small act of kindness can be. It’s handled beautifully in its tone and execution.

The Art: Webb’s art is beautiful in this issue. All of the characters look great and the character designs and style are reminiscent of classic children’s storybooks. A great looking issue with art that matches the sweet tone of the story.
