When Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was fired by Disney, many wondered where the director would land with his next project. Many thought that the director’s dismissal was the perfect opportunity to DC Films to scoop up the director for one of the many projects they have in the pipeline and it looks like that’s what they’ve done.

According to an exclusive in Deadline, James Gunn has been hired to write and possibly direct the next chapter in the Suicide Squad franchise. Gavin O’Connor was attached to direct, but has moved on to another project with Batman star Ben Affleck.

According to Deadline, Warner Brothers has been looking for a project to work with Gunn on since he was fired by Disney and the director, who has brought in over $1 billion dollars with his Guardians of the Galaxy films, seemed like the perfect fit for another ensemble super group. Gunn is expected to bring a completely new take to the property which was originally helmed by David Ayer.
