The next Universal monster film getting a reboot will have the previous films director at the helm.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has hired a director for its upcoming reboot of the classic Universal monster The Wolfman. Leigh Whannell has been tapped to direct the upcoming film starring Ryan Gosling as the titular Wolfman. Blumhouse will produce the film with Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo writing the script.

Ryan Gosling will play a television anchorman who is attacked and becomes infected. The plot is being compared to films like Network and Nightcrawler in tone.

Whannell is the writer of films like Saw, Dead Silence and Insidious. He is also the director of Insidious: Chapter 3 and last year’s The Invisible Man which he wrote the screenplay for.

Wolfman joins a growing list of Universal monster movies currently in development including The Invisible Woman from Charlie’s Angels director Elizabeth Banks, Karyn Kusama’s Dracula, the Dracula spinoff Renfield from Dexter Fletcher and Paul Feig’s Dark Army.
