The Rundown: Detectives Chubb deals with an unfriendly NYPD, while Batman searches for a new headquarters.
A brief overview of the previous issue is given. Then, Detective Chubb has a tense run in with Detective Keenan. Meanwhile, Commissioner Montoya has an informal meeting with the NYPD leading her to seek out Detective Chubb for an interesting conversation. Afterwards, Chubb and Montoya find themselves in a difficult situation, and are soon aided by Batman. Later, Chubb confronts Keenan and his cohorts. Finally, while on a scouting mission, Batman is approached by someone unexpected.
Elsewhere, the Fox family discuss the aftermath of Tamara’s injuries and recovery. Later, Tanya Fox converses with the mayor of New York City.
The Story: This chapter serves as a jumping in point for the series. Ridley does an excellent job of blending real world concerns with masked hero adventure. I am also impressed with the varying storylines regarding the Fox family that play into the Batman identity. Jace’s run as Batman has been marked by those familial relations and it is interesting to see the journey he has taken with them since taking on that mantel. The subplot involving Detective Chubb is also appealing and I am excited to see watch the evolution of her association with Batman.
The Art: This good-looking issue features realistic comic book styling with emphasis on character expression and form. The attention to detail is emotionally connective and allows further insight into the characters feelings. Although minor, there action scenes are interesting and well-done. Overall, I found the artwork impressive and fitting for the storyline.
