The Rundown: Aaron Slaughter recounts his past as he prepares to face a monster in his present.

Aaron Slaughter is on the hunt for a monster and remembers a time in his past when he was training under Jessica. A time when the white masks who terrorized him were in full force and Cecilia seemed to encourage their behavior. The two women clash about their philosophies until interrupted. When they return home, Jessica has a heart to heart with Aaron about his emotions and what is holding him back in the field.

At the house, Aaron is shaken when another white mask is introduced and told that he would be rooming with Aaron. Aaron is tasked with showing Jace the grounds, but the young man is more interested in seeing the Dragon. As they move throughout the house, Jace discovers that they know more about what happened to his house than they told him. In the present, Aaron is on a mission when he is interrupted by a child who knows about the monster he is hunting. As he tracks the monster, he notes that this monster is not unfamiliar to him.

The Story: James Tynion IV and Tate Brombal craft an engaging mystery in this first issue. The story deftly lays out the conflicts both personal and external. There is a compelling arc to Aaron that becomes more apparent as the story unfolds. The plot is fantastic and making it a personal story for Aaron is a great narrative choice.

The Art: Chris Shehan does amazing work with the art in the issue. The characters look amazing and the action is thrilling. There are some great visual moments and everything leading to the final was stunning.
