The Rundown: Mercedes is deported back to Guatemala. Juan learns more about his powers.

Mercedes returns to her home country. When she contacts Gladys, she learns of Juan’s experience at the border, and his current whereabouts. Mercedes then has a phone conversation with her son that is both encouraging and sad. Later on, Gladys helps Juan with his special ability. Unfortunately, they encounter strangers, and are forced into a deadly confrontation. In their attempt to escape, Gladys reveals something surprising.

The Story: Anta’s perfectly crafted narrative is both devastating and intriguing. This important work describes the familial toll of family separation in such painful and relatable terms it brought me to tears. Yet, this tale expertly transforms that sadness into hope and encouragement. And then, it unexpectedly pivots into adventure. The cliff hanger ending left me impatient for more. And I can’t wait for the next episode.

The Art: Wieszczyk uses a youthful drawing style that is heavy on character expression and form. Valenza’s color work is muted, and works perfectly with the story’s setting. The panels are brilliantly done, especially those containing no dialogue or narration. The opening scenes were so transportive, I felt my own heart breaking. Well done to the artists. Well done.
