The Miser’s Gift

The first story in this issue features Hellboy traveling to Budapest to help a young man whose act of kindness has cursed him with nightmares connected to a gold piece he received from a miser he helped one night. When Hellboy, the professor and the young man go out looking for the ghost street and the Miser himself, Hellboy and the young man will have to find a different way to end the threat of the miser. One that is in keeping with the spirit of the season. A great story from start to finish.

The Longest Night

A group of people find themselves locked away in a cabin in the middle of winter with a creature from hell roaming the countryside. As a member of the group discusses the recent death of one of their party, the victim’s brother becomes the target of the death investigation. When he leaves the house to escape the accusations, he runs into something he never expected. A fun story that hits all the marks for a great detective yarn and ghost story.

The Beast of Ingelheim

A priest recalls his life in service of stopping evil before he succumbs to his own death. He tells the story of a hunt for an evil that preyed on those close to his home and when he and his brothers took up arms to track down the beast, they find something unexpected. This is a very short story and the ambivalence of its ending bothered me when I first read it. It’s a fine story that seems to be building to something interesting, but it falls flat right at the end.
