Professor Bruttenholm is off on a secret mission to check out a hidden base in Colorado. A base that might be hiding something even the BPRD isn’t prepared for. As Hellboy takes some time off for rest and relaxation, the rest of the BPRD continues with business as usual including the training of field agents. A prospect that Woodrow is not fond of.

At the same time, the Russian version of the organization is conducting its own experiments and their rather unique director wants information about the BPRD. The information she receives includes that possibility of a mole in the origanization. At headquarters, Susan is asked to use her abilities to find something out about a mystery photo and that photo shows a connection between the professor and the Russian director.

I liked the mystery that Bruttenholm is investigating and more attention should have been paid to it. The time spent at the BPRD with the recruits was not that compelling and the conversation between Laine and Woodrow should have happened sooner to get more impact and insight into the problems that organization is facing in regards to budget. The interlude with the Moscow organization was really interesting and I wanted to see more of that in tandem with the interlude with Susan and her part of the investigation. Too much of the issue seemed to bring the reader to the precipice of something interesting and then leave them there.

The art was really good, but there really wasn’t much to the story to make the visuals memorable.
