Warner Brothers is continuing with their plans to expand the world of Matt Reeves’ upcoming ‘The Batman’ film with a new series for HBO Max and it the streaming service has brought on a new showrunner to bring it to life.

According to Deadline, Warner Brothers has brought in Joe Barton to take over showrunning duties on the new series. Terence Winter, the creator of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire was originally attached to the series, but left due to creative differences. Barton is known for creating the crime drama Giri/Haji for the BBC and Netflix along with writing for the sci-fi series Humans.

The series will be a companion to the Matt Reeves film and will examine the corruption in Gotham City from the point of view of a crooked detective in the GCPD. The series will take place during the first year of the Dark Knight’s presence when a “masked vigilante…starts to unsettle the city”.

It sounds like the series will be the GCPD version of ‘The Shield’ with viewers looking at crime from the point of view of the corrupt. No word yet on who will star in the series or whether the Batman himself will make an appearance.
