The Rundown: Rocket’s history is revealed as the rest of the Guardians are shown the extent of the Universal Church of Truth’s new plans.

Groot and Moondragon confront the ailing Rocket about his decision to leave them and he opens his mind to show her not only the circumstances that brought him into existence, but also the fact that the experiments that made him into who he is are no longer keeping him together. Groot reminds him that they are family and that he should have trusted in them.

The rest of the Guardians are taken by J’Son into the new Universal Church of Truth and Peter wants to know what his father and the rest of the Church are doing. When he sees his friends Quasar and others being used as a power source, he confronts his father. J’Son soon reveals to his son the extent of what the church has planned and how destructive it could be for the entire galaxy.

The Story: There is a good, but not great, balance in this story between Rocket’s story and J’Son’s. I would have liked to see more of Rocket’s story told because his part of this issue seemed rushed. There are some great moments in the story like Groot’s confrontation with Rocket and the scene between Lockjaw and Cosmo. Cates always does great things with dialogue and character interactions and this issue is no exception. Other than the pacing issues, I continue to be interested in where this story goes next and how it evolves for the characters.

The Art: Cory Smith impresses with the art in this issue. I really enjoyed how scenes were composed, especially the character interaction scenes.
