The Rundown: A new threat spreads across the galaxy and Nova needs the Guardians to help, but the team isn’t what it used to be.

With galactic empires in turmoil, a newly resurrected group of Olympian gods are spreading chaos and destruction. When Nova realizes that he needs help to stop them, he goes looking for the Guardians of the Galaxy. Unfortunately, the Guardians are transitioning out of the lives of heroes and are trying to find peace as family. It’s everything Peter could want. He is happy with his friends and he and Gamora are together. When Rider arrives, it’s Gamora who puts the brakes on them suiting up and jumping back into the fray.

When Peter and Rocket have trouble sleeping, they decide to suit up and head out to join Nova’s team. Realizing how small this new team is, the new Guardians decide the best way to stop the gods is with a stealth mission. Unfortunately, it does not go as planned.

The Story: Al Ewing does an amazing job of centering this story on Peter and Rocket. Their restlessness and spirit of adventure are contagious and you want to follow them on this mission. There are some great emotional moments throughout as well as humor. The moments with the group before the action are fantastic and Gamora’s arc is written perfectly. I’m enamored with this story so far and the surprise ending grabs my attention and makes me want to read more.

The Art: Cabal delivers some great visual moments in this issue. The contrast in style between the standard panels when Peter and friends are relaxing to the big splash pages are gorgeous and brilliantly done.
