The 2020 Emmy nominations have gone out and it looks like some of our favorite genre television series have a chance of taking home the top prizes this year.

Traditionally, genre television shows including science fiction and superheroes have been nominated for things like special effects or stunts. Well this year many of the top categories at the upcoming Emmy awards will feature both series and stars from shows that not only appealed to fans of the source material they came from, but also brought in new fans to experience these new and unique stories for themselves.

What We Do In The Shadows (FX)

The hilarious Vampire comedy based on the film from Taika Waititi finds itself nominated for Best Comedy alongside The Marvelous Ms. Maisel and Curb Your Enthusiasm. The series is also nominated for its writing, its cast and its production design leaving the series with 8 total nominations this year.

The Mandalorian (Disney Plus)

The Mandalorian and his clan have already wrapped their second season coming this fall to the streaming service, but the Star Wars live action series has been nominated for Best Drama. Mando and Baby Yoda have also received another 14 nominations this year including voice over performance (Taika Waititi’s IG-88), production design, cinematography, costumes, makeup and guest actor in a drama series for Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon.

Watchmen (HBO)

The limited series based on the world of the influential comic book  blew everyone away this year with its gripping story and remarkable characters. It’s been nominated for 26 Emmys this year including Limited Series, Lead Actress (Regina King), Lead Actor (Jeremy Irons), Supporting Actor (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Louis Gossett Jr and Jovan Adepo), Supporting Actress (Jean Smart) and more.

Star Trek Picard (CBS All-Access)

The return of Jean Luc Picard to the world of Star Trek has been hailed by many fans and the academy is honoring it as well with 5 nominations including costuming, makeup, sound editing and sound mixing.

The 72nd annual Emmy Awards will be on ABC September 20, 2020.
