Deron GenerallyI wrote earlier this year about the resurgence of adaptations of Stephen King’s works. From the already released Dark Tower, the premiere of Mr. Mercedes on the Audience Network to the upcoming big screen adaptation of his novel It coming to this week, King’s works have gotten new life from some of the most interesting creative minds working in Hollywood today.
Mike Flanagan, director of Oculus and Before I Wake is bringing one of King’s most tense thrillers to life with the release of the movie Gerald’s Game on Netflix this month. The film, based on the 1992 novel of the same name, tells the story of Jessie and Gerald Burlingame. Gerald takes his wife Jessie to a secluded cabin in order to reinvigorate their sex life through role-playing using handcuffs to secure her to the bed. Jessie has been up for these games before, but this time, she protests and in the midst of her panic, Gerald has a massive heart attack and dies.
Cut off from civilization and secured by both wrists to the bed, Jessie begins to panic. As the hours pass, lack of food, sleep and water cause her hallucinate as she desperately tries to escape. In the midst of her panic two new threats emerge in the woods outside the secluded cabin, but are they real or imagined? And will Jessie live long enough to discover the truth?
Gerald’s Game stars Carla Gugino (Watchmen, Sin City) as Jessie, Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek, American Crime Story) as Gerald along with Henry Thomas, Kate Siegel and Carel Struycken.
Gerald’s Game will premiere on Netflix September 29, 2017.
