The Rundown: Mal and Boss Moon have to escape an Alliance base as Zoe fights to stop a new war in the place where it all began.

Mal and Boss Moon find themselves surrounded by Alliance troops who have orders to take them both into custody. Moon is going to have to do something desperate to escape and that involves letting into the ravenous creatures surrounding the base. As they make their way out of the base, Inarra calls to tell Mal that she has worked out a way to have him pardoned, but that deal doesn’t include Moon.

At the same time, Zoe and the resurrected Browncoats find themselves staring down a Unificator fleet who want to help Moon as well. As Zoe works to convince the Browncoats to join with them, old wounds surface for many and the standoff leads to violence. The violent encounter makes its way across the stars leading both factions back to Serenity Valley.

The Story: Greg Pak makes a great point of bringing this story back to the event that shaped Mal and Zoe’s relationship, the battle of Serenity Valley. As big as this story has gotten, focusing on that place and moving the plot to get them back it was a masterful piece of storytelling. I continue to be impressed with this series and the directions that this story is going in. The conclusion only solidifies that the drama is going to be more intense in the next issue and I can’t wait to read what’s next.

The Art: Dan McDaid has some great action moments throughout this issue. He does an excellent job of moving the story along visually and I love the details throughout.
