Granny’s long-term plans begin to come into focus in this new issue.

After secretly receiving information from Darkseid’s dying mother, Granny decides to begin her plans in secret. The first part includes the exchange of Orion for Scott Free and biding her time until they can use him to start a war with New Genesis. In the present, Scott helps Barda realize that they have a shared history and she allow him to escape.

The warped gender politics of Apokalips kicks in again as Barda is punished for her actions. When she tries to plead her case, she is submitted to the misogyny of the system she has dedicated her life to. When her journey puts her back in the path of Wilik, she decides to tell Darkseid the truth about the secret she’s been keeping rather than become like Aurelie.

It’s a move that causes unexpected consequences for everyone, including forcing Barda to flee to Earth. A move that Granny herself has a hand in forcing.

Though aspects of the Scott Free story seemed a little rushed to me, Cecil Castellucci crafts an engaging and entertaining story in this issue. Between the gender politics and Granny’s plotting, the story explores many different aspects of what life is like for women on Apokalips and those issues definitely resonate in the real world in different ways. The story does a great job of showcasing those struggles while also giving the reader a view of how Granny survives and plots in this environment.

Adriana Melo does an excellent job with the art and definitely emphasizes the Fury of these characters.
