The Rundown: Lantern Mullein’s investigation continues in the wake of the protest and we learn more about what brought her to the Far Sector.
The protest is over and Mullein enjoys a momentary respite from the drama as she continues her investigation. She decides to follow the money, or cryptocurrency, to find some kind of clue. At the same time, she learns more about the AI she’s hired to help her. The twists and turns in the investigation lead her to reminisce about her time on Earth and her life.
We learn about Jo Mullein and her life in New York. We see the sociological and class struggles she grew up as well as the discrimination she witnessed even in the face of personal and professional heroism. We see the circumstances that led her to a chance meeting with a Guardian looking for a new kind of Lantern for a special assignment.
The Story: Jemisin slows the story down in this issue to give the main character the back story readers have been wondering about. The story itself is well done and compelling with scenes that touch on racial and social issues as well as sex discrimination. These scenes mirror themes found in the character’s current situation and that makes the story intriguing and relevant.
The Art: Jamal Campbell continues to deliver some beautifully detailed art throughout this issue. The characters are beautifully rendered and every panel is filled with details that capture the eye from the way characters are drawn to the way panels progress to tell the story.
