The Rundown: Lantern Mullein’s murder investigation takes some new turns as the suspect list continues to grow.

With her first murder suspect killed by another, Mullein is on a chase through the city for the fleeing killer. When she loses the suspect, she returns to the cells to investigate the dead murder suspect and try to find a motive.

With the list of suspects growing and no answers coming from anyone that can be of use, she decides to go see a new friend and refocus. After learning more about the new culture she is living in, Mullein decides to visit someone who might have answers as to motive, but she finds him to be more of a liability.

The Story: A cleverly told, entertaining follow up to the first issue. Mullein is a fascinating, complicated and compelling character and as much as I am enjoying her adventures in the present, I find myself interested in her past. Jemisin writes her with a unique personality that makes her engaging to the reader. I like the fact that she’s on her own and confident in her abilities. I’m interested  in this world as well and can’t wait to explore more of it.

The Art: Jamal Campbell’s art is breathtaking. There are so many amazing visual moments in this issue. One of my favorite sequences is the chase through the city, but Campbell not only makes the action look great, but the characters are beautifully detailed.
