The Rundown: Avery Aldridge has a power he doesn’t understand in a world that hates him for what he is.

Avery Aldridge works at a small diner in Alabama in the 1950’s. After leaving work one night, he is followed by someone from his past who has a problem with the black man and decides to remind him of his place. Unfortunately, his threats of violence unleash something within Avery that causes a bigger tragedy and makes Avery go on the run.

Avery’s remembers his in the military and how a mission during the war is directly connected to the event that gave him the powers he can barely control.

The Story: Latoya Morgan crafts a powerful introduction in this first issue. From the first few panels, the story is laid out to setup how dangerous the world is to the character, but also how powerful he could be. The dialogue and narration are great and the way the story transitions between time periods gives a rich history to the character. I am impressed with this first issue and the potential of this story on several levels. I also really enjoy the mystery that is being created and am intrigued with all the directions it could go. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

The Art: Walt Barna delivers a beautifully dark, noir tone to the story that is perfect for the time period. There are moments in dark alleys that are brilliantly designed as well as big action scenes from Avery’s flashbacks that are visually thrilling.
